How To Start A Clothing Brand In College
Share
Poise Society was built on a simple but powerful belief: confidence isn’t something you put on, it’s something you build into everything you wear.
Poise Society’s founder Natalie Gillis found herself frustrated with her closet during her senior year at the University of Georgia. Nothing felt like it fully worked. Pieces were either stylish but impractical, or comfortable but lacking intention. She wanted clothing that could move with her life, from workouts to classes, meetings to everyday errands, and still feel polished in every setting.
So while balancing classes, jobs, and real life, she started building what she couldn’t find.
With no outside funding, every step of Poise Society was intentional. Natalie reinvested everything she earned, from photography work to internships, back into the brand. There were no shortcuts and no overnight success moments, just consistency, creativity, and a clear vision guiding every decision.
From the outside, building a brand can look seamless. You see the clean branding, the curated content, the “day in the life” routines, and moments that feel organized and effortless. It can look like everything is working exactly as planned.
But that is only part of the story.
What people do not see are the days that feel overwhelming before they even begin. The mental load of constant decision-making, the pressure of juggling too many things at once, and the reality that most days are not structured or aesthetic. Some days, just keeping up feels like a win. It requires a level of trust in your vision that you are constantly rebuilding.
Through all of that, the intention behind Poise Society has stayed the same. To create pieces that feel effortless, elevated, and actually wearable in real life, not just in theory.
What started as a personal frustration has grown into something bigger, a brand rooted in confidence, intention, and everyday ease.
Now, that vision is expanding into real life experiences.
On May 10, 2026, Poise Society is hosting PS Sport in Charleston at The Waverly at 11:15 AM. The event celebrates the launch of the Poise activewear collection with a mat Pilates class and first access to shop the collection.
It is more than a launch. It is a reflection of what the brand has always been about, movement, confidence, and community.
Starting a clothing brand in college is not about having everything figured out. It is about recognizing a gap, trusting your perspective, and committing to building something meaningful even when it feels uncertain.
Poise Society did not come from perfection. It came from persistence.
And it continues to grow with it.
